Guthrie Gears Up for Worlds with Leadville 100

Teams - Spin Cycle Racing
It seems just riding a bike is enough for some people but for Ellen Guthrie it is a different story. After recently taking both the National Titles in both Masters Road and Masters Marathon Mountain Bike Championships Guthrie has decided to gear up for Worlds in France by riding the 2009 Leadville Trail 100.
The Leadville Trail 100 is an ultra distance mountain bike race held each year in Leadville, Colorado (Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the country. Leadville proudly stands at 10,125 above sea level.) Each year this event draws a huge crowd as well as famous cyclists such as Lance Armstrong, Floyd Landis and David Wiens. This will not be the first year that Guthrie has competed in the LT100. This year she expects to cross the finish line close to 4:00 pm after being on the bike nearly 10 hours. The LT100 is a good warm up for the main event the following weekend in Praloup, France.
This years UCI Worlds Masters MTB Championships are held in Praloup, France from Tuesday, August 25 through to Sunday August 30 with practice and training taking up the first three days and the competition starting on Friday.
Spin Cycles' staff, teams, and customers would like to wish Ellen Guthrie the best of luck in both events. We know she is an awesome women and will represent herself as well as our nation proudly in France. Go Ellen!

Turning a crash into a bash

Article posted on slctrib.

In the summer of 2005, Alex Obbard of Salt Lake was riding his mountain bike as he did several times each week. He was training for a race by riding the Bonneville Shoreline trail when he suddenly found himself flung from his bike.

He ended up concussed, bruised and broken. For two months, Obbard wore a cast around his torso holding his back and chest in place.

In the spring of 2006, Obbard decided to do some extra training for the upcoming mountain biking season since he had lost out on a good part of 2005. Since snow still covers many mountain biking trails in March and April, Obbard hopped on a road bike to give his legs the needed preparation.

When mountain biking season came around, he alternated days between his two bikes and decided to train for a road bike race. Why not the 206-mile Lotoja classic in August that starts in Logan and ends in Jackson, Wyo.? Training started getting more intense and Obbard spent several hours on both his mountain bike and his road bike each week. He completed Lotoja in 2006 and trained for more races in 2007. He applied for Category 4 status in 2008 despite not having completed enough races and was accepted. Now, Obbard, 45, is a Category 3 rider.
